DIY Doula Zine: Self-Care for Before, During, & After Your Abortion

New Edition Coming Soon

"[DIY Doula] is jam-packed with useful tips that are often delivered with a laidback yet trustworthy voice, which lends each entry the feeling that it was written by your best friend. DIY Doula shines for how valuable and accessible its information is[...]. It would be difficult to find this kind of stuff elsewhere, without being loaded by sterile, medical jargon." -Stephanie Jimenez for Ravishly.com

The Doula Project believes everyone should be trusted to make the decisions right for their body or pregnancy. That’s why we created DIY Doula: Self-Care for Before, During, & After Your Abortion, a zine all about self-care and agency – two things we all need. Our goal for this 48-page zine is to be “long-distance doulas” to our readers who might not have access to a doula in their communities. While we may not be able to hold their hands during their procedures, through comics, drawings, personal essays, games, and more, we’re tackling some of the tough questions, affirming that people can trust their decisions, modeling how to ask for support, and giving tips on self-advocacy. The zine also acts as a huge, diverse toolbox that gives some more practical support and answers FAQs that we often find ourselves addressing in clinics. We’d love to table with our zine at your event! Reach out to zine@doulaproject.org. This project received a Seed Support grant from the Abortion Conversation Project to reduce abortion stigma.

We’re making free and sliding-scale copies of the zine available to people having abortions, and all copies sold above cost support our work providing free full-spectrum care. Get yourself a copy. Get your friends a copy. Pass it on!

If you’re downloading the digital edition, please consider supporting our work with a donation.

 Birth Program

The Doula Project Birth Doula Match program is on hiatus for new requests, so we are unable to provide doula matches at this time.

The Doula Project works across the spectrum of choice to provide birth doula care at no cost to people who cannot otherwise afford it.

Our birth program coordinator can be reached at birth@doulaproject.org

 Train and Volunteer with Us

We are not currently reviewing applications for our training class, and only doulas trained in our program can volunteer in our collective, as our weekend-long training includes critical information needed to work with our partner providers.

Applications typically open early in the new year, and training takes place in late May-June. Please use the “Subscribe” section at the bottom of this page to sign up for email alerts about our trainings and volunteer opportunities!

Groups interested in requesting a training from The Doula Project may reach us through our Contact Us form. We are unable to reply to individual requests about future trainings; all information about future trainings with The Doula Project will be posted here and on social media when available.

 Internships

We are not currently accepting applications, but please sign up for our alerts to learn when our next call for interns starts!

The Doula Project seeks interns to work with us in both clinical and administrative settings. Internships are available every semester and the summer session. They are unpaid, but we are able to offer a monthly Metrocard and school credit where applicable, and our participation in the Reproductive Rights Activist Service Corps (RRASC) Summer Internship Program offers stipends.
